Avant et après la lettre

A book is placed over a pile of small pieces of diferent book pages. These pieces appear to be getting out of (or in) the book, covering the whole floor. Avant et après la lettre is an installation created for the library room of Chateau de Rentilly, at Parc Culturel de Rentilly, France.

The French phrase “avant la lettre” means “before the term was coined; used after a term applied anachronistically.”

The outside view is an unfinished space, like a maze/house under construction. When the visitor enters, he walks through some tiled and wallpapered rooms, he crosses doors and steps on carpets with book covers images. Bricks and books are a construction element here (and literature, ideas, words).
When the library is reached, the visitor is surprised by a white finished room where he finds books and chairs to sit on and enyoy reading.
The artists proposed three collections for the library: one was the answer of the artists participating in the 29a Bienal to the question: “Which book would you use to build your house?”; other was an open call for artists books; and, finally, a selection of contemporary literature.

A Biblioteca de Babel (The Library of Babel)

Ambient

"Is there any book you would like to share with the world?"

I ask people participate in the project lending the book they find essential in any library. With the borrowed books I create a temporary library. One library that could collect all the books in the world.

Other pieces connected to the library idea are also shown in the same space. The visitors enjoy the ambient reading or resting, listening to selected audio and music. They can also add their books during the exhibition period. At the end of the exhibition, all books are returned to its owners.

Rayuela (Hopscotch)

Cortázar's Hopscotch begins with a proposal: "In its own way, this book consists of many books, but two books above all." Cortázar invites the reader to choose one of the two possibilities by reading the book linearly or by leaping between chapters following the alternative order he proposes.

In Rayuela installation most of the text of the book was digitally suppressed by me except for the sentences in which I found motion verbs and the numbers of pages and chapters.
